MAKE getting a new job your New Year’s resolution.

Despite difficulties in the job market over the past couple of years, workers in the South-West are feeling positive about the coming 12 months.

Research from our training provider Home Learning College shows that 55% of local residents in employment think their career prospects will change for the better in 2011 – the highest figure for any UK region. Only 24% are concerned that things may get worse.

This positive outlook is reflected in the fact that 36% of economically active adults in the region plan to start looking for a new job after the festive break.

Dave Snow, academic director at Home Learning College, said: “While it’s great that people are feeling confident and motivated, this influx of jobseekers does mean the recruitment market will become more competitive.

“As such, it’s important to stand out from fellow candidates and show why you’re the right person for the job. That’s where a professionally accredited qualification can make all the difference.

“No matter what level of study you’ve done in the past, it’s never too late to think about signing up for a course that will help take your career to the next level.

Nowadays, numerous options are available to match every learning style. Many courses are offered on a part-time basis, either through a local college or via distance learning. The latter can be an attractive route if you don’t fancy going back into a classroom environment; allowing you to progress at a comfortable pace, with access to a dedicated tutor.”

Alternatively, you might want to think about gaining new skills that will allow you to progress in your current role or even move into a different sector entirely.
