James Franco was feeling emotional as his play Of Mice and Men closed on Broadway - breaking a box office record in the process.

The show, co-starring Irish comedian Chris O'Dowd and Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester, earned 1,038,106 US dollars (£611,315) for it's final week - setting a new eight-performance weekly record gross at the Longacre Theatre. It also marked the first time the theatre ever housed a show that crossed the 1 million dollar mark.

James shared photos of himself and the caat at the final curtain call online and tweeted: "That's a wrap on the record breaking production of OF MICE AND MEN. I cried at the curtain call. Much"

The play, an adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel, follows two tragic migrant workers, played by James and Chris, trying to make their way through the Depression.

The play recouped its 3.8 million dollar (£2.24 million) capitalisation in just 12 weeks and ended its 19-week run on Sunday July 27.

It is the first American production chosen to be filmed by National Theatre Live.
