Snowdrops at Forde Abbey
6:00am Tuesday 5th February 2013 in What's On
THE carpets of snowdrops that cloak the lawns at Forde Abbey are already peeping through, promising to make a spectacular show for the special Snowdrop Weekends every Saturday and Sunday throughout February.
These delicate plants have gradually spread over large areas through natural propagation combined with a policy of thinning and transplanting.
Most of the snowdrops are the common snowdrop Galanthus nivalis, including the double form G. nivalis flore pleno. But snowdrop enthusiasts will delight in spotting other varieties hidden in corners such as G. atkinsii in the Rock Garden. Visitors can enjoy the snowdrop scene for entry of £5.
Hot on the heels of the snowdrops will come dramatic swathes of crocus, with Crocus Week running from Saturday. March 2, to Sunday, March 10. The popular Plant Fair is on Sunday, March 3.
