POLISHED and professional – that’s how Chard Light Operatic Society summed up their performances of Me and My Girl at Chard’s Guildhall last weekend.

Now in its 51st year, it was the first time the cast had tackled the West End smash.

Not that they’re strangers to mighty musicals, having last year taken on The Sound Of Music to celebrate the society’s golden anniversary.

Lesley Cole, society secretary and wardrobe manager for Me and My Girl, said: “It’s a well-known musical and a happy musical for which people have a great deal of affection, which was famously revived in the 1980s with Robert Lindsay as the lead.

“It was a lot of hard work, a lot of tap dancing, and the real star of the show is Bill Snibson, played by Chris Williamson, who was in fact likened to Tommy Steele. Anyone who came to see it was left gobsmacked.”

CLOS is taking a rest until 2014, but will be paying singing visits to various venues until the end of the year – details to be confirmed.
