AN entertainment society in Ilminster has been nominated for 15 awards at this year’s eagerly anticipated Phoebe Rees Awards – known as the Somerset Oscars.

The nomination results for the past year have just been announced and the Ilminster Entertainment Society, at The Warehouse Theatre, will see their productions appear in a variety of categories.

From September 1 to the following August 31, the Somerset Fellowship of Drama runs the competition which allows amateur societies to enter their productions.

Among the society’s nominated performances are The Challenge Trophy, KIndertransport, The Boy Who Fell into a Book and Steel Magnolias.

A spokesperson for the Warehouse Theatre said: “It is particularly pleasing that three of our youngsters have been nominated in what is effectively an adult competition.

“We are very proud of Iona, Wilf and Daniel.

“At the Warehouse there is still an acute shortage of people of all ages who want to act!

“We have a lovely theatre, with very good facilities, and it is increasingly difficult to cast the plays.

“Look out for audition notices, be brave, come and have a go.”

The county-wide award presentation will be at the Shrubbery Hotel on October 11 when amateur thespians from all over Somerset gather for dinner and the award announcements.

Auditions for the society’s Christmas production, Flint Street Nativity, have been held at theatre recently.
