IT’S not what you expect on a visit to a beautiful National Trust house . . . dancing in the attic, leaping in the stairwell and just what did the butler see in the drawing room?

However, if you go to Barrington Court you might have a surprise.

The stately home is the venue for a concert called In Between Time – a major new production featuring musician Patrick Wolf and some of the UK’s best contemporary performers.

The event takes place at night with the audience uncovering performances throughout Barrington Court.

Helen Cole, artistic director of In Between Time, said: “In Night Songs, as we peer into opulent state rooms and austere servants’ quarters our very presence marks the changes that have been wrought by history to enable us to be there.

“These houses once echoed with the people who worked and lived there.

“It’s an immense privilege to have been invited to commission new contemporary artworks that respond to these incredible spaces and the stories of people who made these houses come alive.”

The line-up of artist commissions includes new work by theatre-makers Reckless Sleepers, live artist Eloise Fornieles and dancer Iona Kewney.

Patrick Wolf has been commissioned to create a new song following an artistic residency at another National Trust property, Tyntesfield, near Bristol.

Described by Miranda Sawyer in the Observer as ‘Britain’s most innovative, radical and creative pop star’, Wolf has been selected for the commission because of his bold, artistic approach and rich history of successful artistic collaboration, including projects with Patti Smith, Tilda Swinton and Arcade Fire.

Tom Freshwater, of the National Trust, regards the event as a radical experience, saying: “We’re interested in Night Songs as a project reflecting the passage of time as it is represented in each of our properties with the once personal and private artefacts in these great houses acting as documents of wider social and political change.”

The production is being staged on Saturday, February 28, and Sunday, March 1, at 7.30pm.
