A SPECTACULAR historic uniform worn by a local Red Cross nurse will be among the items revealed to the public next week as the Museum of South Somerset launches its new exhibition.
The museum, based in Hendford, Yeovil, and run by South Somerset District Council, will open its doors on Friday, July 10, for a free exhibition called 'Hard Work', which will showcase items of clothing worn to work in the area over the last 250 years.
The famous Mudford Yeomanry Uniform from the 1800s and jackets worn by coachmen from the Three Chough's Hotel will be shown among more recent garments.
The display was researched and prepared by a team of volunteers, supported by the district council's heritage team.
David Hill, the council's visitor services manager said: “Our volunteers gave over 2,000 hours of their time over the last year to help the heritage team to catalogue and sort collections, carry out archive projects, and assist with local history enquiries.
“Over 30,000 items are stored at our Community Heritage Access Centre on the Lufton trading estate and the aim of these exhibitions is to allow the public to see more of them.”
Cllr Sylvia Seal, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and well being added: “It's important that we make the effort to conserve and make available the things that define our local heritage and past.
“We are here to provide the facilities and knowledge and we're pleased to be expanding this to the public and to our volunteers.”
The exhibition will be on display until 5 September.
