YEOVIL will be going pizza crazy later this year when town centre bosses hope to set a new world record.
Tamburino Restaurant, the Quedam Centre and the Yeovil Town Centre Partnership group have now registered with the Guinness World Records in order to attempt to make the longest line of pizzas ever.
The line of pizzas is hoped to be stretched through the Quedam Centre on Sunday, June 29, and to beat the record organisers estimate that more than 1,800 pizzas will have to be made.
Town centre manager, Ian Budd, said: "I had booked a Genuine Italian Market to come to Yeovil for the weekend of June 28-29 and I always like to complement markets with entertainment.
"So I thought why not try a record? I went on the Guinness World Records website and searched for pizza. At that time the record holder was an Italian shopping centre and stood at 186.3-metres and was set in October 2006."
Interested in following-up his pizza-making project, Ian got in touch with Domenico Taravello, of Tamburino Restaurant in South Western Terrace, Yeovil, to see if he would be prepared to attempt the record.
They then contacted Dave Mills, of the Quedam, who has also agreed to join in the fun and use the shopping centre for the pizza challenge.
Domenico said: "When Ian first asked me to attempt this, I agreed immediately as I have the equipment and the chefs to be able to cope.
"I estimated that we would have to make around 700 pizzas. Two weeks later I found out that another restaurant had attempted the record and were claiming to have made a line of over 1,700 pizzas."
But Domenico added: "But I will smash that record even if we have to start at midnight on the day before. We have a lot of planning to do and it won't be easy."
This will be a charity event with money raised going towards funds for the homeless of Yeovil.
