Review of the Year: September 2012
6:00pm Monday 31st December 2012 in News
WE take a look back at the events of 2012 in the Chard, Ilminster and Crewkerne area. Here is what happened in September 2012.
THERE was shock, anger and sadness when it emerged that Chard woman Catherine Wells-Burr, 23, had been murdered. Her body was found in a burnout car in a lane near Ashill on the A358. Three people – two men and a woman – have since been arrested and are due to appear in court in April to face charges in relation to her death.
TRIBUTES were paid after much-loved Chard priest Canon James Fanahan O’Brien died at the age of 93.` WELL-KNOWN hoteliers Stuart and Liz Shepherd announced they had put the Ilminster’s Shrubbery Hotel on the market with a price tag of £1.5million.
THERE was anger about ongoing roadworks in Chard town centre causing problems for motorists and businesses. A DAY of celebrations marked the opening of a sensory centre for young people with learning difficulties in Ilminster.
BRAVE members of the community were praised for helping to save lives following a dramatic late-night fire at a block of flats in Ernest Ashman Place, Chard.
A COMMUNITY fun day took place at Henson Park in Chard – organised by the Street Space youth group who had just returned from helping to convert a portable building into a pharmacy in Seica Mare in Romania, Chard’s twin town.
EXCELLENT weather helped to bring out the crowds for the annual South Petherton Carnival.
