Snow on January 23, 2013: Fair play to Cllr Dorse

A MEMBER of Chard Town Council has been doing exactly what people would expect of their local council this morning - by helping the community they represent.

Cllr Julian Dorse was seen out early this morning shovelling snow and ice off of the pavement going down through Fore Street.

The News caught up with him just after 7am with shovel in hand.

Chief reporter Steve Sowden said: "Fair play to Julian for doing this and trying to make the town centre a little bit safer for pedestrians.

"Although I applaud his community spirit - surely we would have to say that this was going beyond the call of duty, especially so early in the morning."

Steve added: "I hope people will read this and when they are walking down through Chard town centre this morning - they will say 'cheers Julian!"

I have no criticism whatsoever of Cllr. Dorse, it's very public-spirited of him to clear the pavements.

Shouldn't the ratepayers of Chard be asking why an elected and unwaged councillor was doing this task and why council employees weren't?

It also begs the wider question as to why, when heavy snow is forecast, that giro monkeys aren't put on standby ready to clear the paths so that the employed can get to work.

Now THAT'S truly collectivist!

Well he wasn't, the only councillor helping .Cllr Sainsbury in Ilminster and her husband spent a good deal of Friday clearing the road and pavements in Heron Way. Very grateful to them ,they even cleared our steps for us .Thank you both .

Certainly all very public spirited and appreciated by most, but unfortunately, by carrying out these actions without the relative authorisation etc. they are laying themselves open to litigation should someone slip and injure themselves on the 'cleared' area.

Well if it keeps him off the pool table, drinking beer in the Phoenix pub all the better.
