A PETITION to encourage dredging of rivers on the Somerset Levels has been started on a Government website.

Over 720 people have already signed the document, created by Andrew Lee.

Homes and businesses have been hit by several floods in the past year and several are still feeling the effects.

I agree and have signed the petition. Regular dredging of rhynes, drains and rivers across the Levels would let the ground drain better and subsequently reduce the severity & duration of the flooding that we have seen recently.

This winter has been paticularlly wet. But its got to the stage where its costing many people an awful lot of money

The roads and infrastucture will need repairs in places. Extra fuel spent on using diversions, for private users, haulage, and public sector cars/vans. Farmers unable to use their land. Potentially even loss of out of season torists.

Sometimes it pays to spend a bit of money.

Those that take money* from us, either locally or nationally, have foregone any further right to do so, if they aren't prepared to invest a little into dredging the rivers.
*Taxation from farmers or other residents, road fund licence and fuel duty from people who have to drive tens of miles detour every day.
