Morrisons are coming to Chard! Morrisons are coming to Chard!

SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons are coming to Chard – that is official!

The company has told the News that it will be opening one of its convenience stores, known as M-Local, in the shop premises soon to be vacated by Blockbusters in Fore Street.

A Morrisons spokesman told the News that it was unclear as to an actual date they would be opening in Chard, but it would be later this year.

Morrisons announced last month it was buying 49 Blockbuster stores around the country after the DVD and computer game rental business went into administration.

Managing director of Morrisons, Gordon Mowat, said they would be accelerating their expansion of the M-Local brand.

“We are rolling out the Morrisons M-Local estate at pace this year and these acquisitions of Blockbuster stores gives us a kick-start in securing a solid foothold in this key sector,” he said.

“The convenience market is growing as more people shop locally and we want to be in a position to take advantage of this.”

A sign on the window of the Blockbusters store in Chard has said that it will be closing on March 20.

The news means that another big name in supermarket shopping will be in the town alongside Tesco and Sainsburys.

A major part of the planned regeneration of Chard town centre is the building of a large superstore around the Boden Mill.

Morrisons have been touted as a possible occupier of that store, although speculation will now start that another big supermarket chain could be lined-up?

It won't be very 'convenient' unless you are disabled or drive a taxi...

Another supermarket!!!! Surely 4 is enough. What about all the small businesses in the area? Are we trying to close them down?
