New powers for police support officers
4:00am Sunday 29th September 2013 in News
ANYONE breaking the law in Chard, Ilminster and the surrounding villages could now be detained by a PCSO for up to half an hour.
The new powers, announced by Avon and Somerset Chief Constable Nick Gargan, allow PCSOs to order a suspect to remain with them pending the arrival of a police officer. Failing to obey the order is an offence.
PCSOs across the force area have been trained in their extra powers, which also permit them to search people for alcohol and tobacco.
Avon and Somerset’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens, joined PCSOs in Somerset last week to see them using their new powers.
