A woman was rescued from the River Yeo this evening (December 30) after she jumped in to save her dog.

The fire service got a call from a passer-by reporting a woman stuck in the river, just of Lyde Road in Yeovil.

Two fire teams from Yeovil and the special rescue team from Bridgwater were sent to the incident.

A fire service spokesman said: "On arrival the crews found the female, chest deep in the water and she had been unable to get out due to the angle of the bank.

"The dog had already been rescued by the passer-by, who had tied dog leads together and pulled it out.

"The female was rescued by fire crews in water rescue gear and handed over to paramedics."
