DAVID Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, has welcomed the news that AgustaWestland’s new generation AW189 helicopter has been issued with type certification by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
This means that the new helicopter has met the incredibly strict safety demands set by EASA and can now be used in the field.
The AW189 helicopter was unveiled at the Paris Air Show in June 2011 and has been designed to withstand harsh conditions during long range offshore transport flights and search and rescue missions.
AgustaWestland has already received orders for 130 AW189 helicopters from a number of international companies, some of whom will now be receiving AW189 helicopters shortly.
David Laws said: "I am really pleased that AgustaWestland’s latest helicopter, the AW189, has received certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency.
"This news, coming shortly after last month’s announcement that AgustaWestland had been awarded two contracts by the Ministry of Defence worth £760 million, proves once again that AgustaWestland is a leading international company competing very successfully on the global stage.
"I am very proud of their achievements and I want to congratulate all those at AgustaWestland who have worked so hard to ensure that the AW189 achieved EASA certification."
