PEOPLE from Ilminster who go the extra mile to make their town a better place could win an award.

Nominations have opened for Ilminster Town Council’s 2014 Citizens Award.

Ilminster Mayor Emma Jane Taylor said: “We are looking for people who have contributed significantly towards the benefit of the town and the people who live and work here.

“Often people work tirelessly and without fuss and go largely un-noticed but make a vital contribution and these awards aim to recognise such service.”

Each nomination must be signed by three Ilminster citizens and explain the reasons why the person is being nominated.

All nominations will be considered by a selection panel made up of town councillors who will pick the winner.

Previous award winners include people involved in instigating an annual town event, litter picking, fundraising, volunteering and working with young people.

This year, a new award has been introduced at the request of a group of young people who wanted something to remember a friend by.

Bradley Cullen was born with a serious illness and died last year. His friends describe his approach to life as ‘inspirational’.

The Bradley Cullen Youth Citizens Award is for a young person who has excelled, whether by overcoming adversity, participating in the community, personal achievement or caring for others.

Nominations for both sets of awards are available from Ilminster Town Council’s offices in North Street between 10am and noon Monday to Friday or by emailing town.council@ilminster.|gov.uk Forms can also be downloaded from the town council website at www.ilminster.gov.uk The closing date for the receipt of nominations for both sets of awards is Friday, April 25.

The winners will be revealed at the annual town meeting on May 6.
