THE Wambrook Waddle got off to a flying start in its first year on Sunday.

The 10k run is a replacement for the former Run in the Wild at Cricket St Thomas.

Organiser Chris Wadey said: “After discussions with the Eames family, and in particular Tom Eames, we were able to arrange The Wambrook Waddle – an event run on the Eames’ land and for the most part off-road.

“A lot of the route has been off public footpath, so it makes it even more appealing to off-road runners.”

Wayne Loveridge, a member of Chard Road Runners, won the race in 42 minutes and 51 seconds. He was followed by second a Chard runner, Richard Clifton, in 45 minutes and 36 seconds.

The first male veteran in the 40-plus category was Bruce Stawbridge, of Honiton Running Club. First home in the 50-plus category was Mike Harvey, of Yeovil Town RRC, and in the 60-plus group, Richard Boulter, also From Yeovil Town RRC.

Exmouth Harriers’ Ellie Sutcliffe won the women’s race in 49 minutes and nine seconds with Axe Valley Runners’ Eleanor Wood (54.34) second.

First 35-plus woman was Nicola Barry in one hour, two minutes and 16 seconds. First woman 45-plus and third woman overall was Judy Davey of Honiton RC. First 55-plus woman was Ann Potefract of Phoenix Panthers in one hour, ten minutes and 38 seconds.

Jasmine Stone, of Honiton Running Club, won the junior race in ten minutes and 26 seconds with the first boy home George Parris in 11 minutes and four seconds.

Tea, coffee, a barbecue and cakes were on offer and all proceeds will go to the church fund in Wambrook.
