PLANS to move emergency stroke services from Yeovil to Taunton should be scrapped, says MP David Laws.

Mr Laws is due to meet leaders of the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group on Thursday (May 22) to ask them to reconsider the plans.

He said: “I’m concerned that what’s being proposed may be workable in some large urban areas, but doesn’t make sense in Somerset.

“Effective emergency stroke care means patients need to be treated quickly, but this proposal can only add to travel times, particularly for those around Yeovil and north Dorset.

“Journey times from Yeovil to Taunton can be quite long, particularly when there’s congestion or an accident.

“The proposal to have only one emergency stroke centre in Somerset would actually be more expensive than the current arrangement, so this proposal isn’t about saving money.”
