Litter art on Yeovil streets

First published in News

CREATING art from litter found on the streets of Yeovil may sound like a load of rubbish, but that’s what the Yeovil in Bloom team are doing to raise important environmental awareness issues in the town.

On Monday 7 July at 10am in Yeovil Borough, Yeovil in Bloom staff will be creating Rubbish Art with items of litter that have been found in the environment that residents and visitors visit regularly.

The event takes places just over a week before the Britain in Bloom South West judges come to Yeovil to judge the town on Tuesday 15 July. Members of the public are welcomed to help with the creation of the art.

Chairman of the Yeovil in Bloom Steering Group, Councillor David Recardo said, “Raising awareness about litter and its impact on the local community is part of our strategy to tackle local environmental issues in a positive and effective manner. We hope that this initiative will make people aware of the amount of litter that is dropped in Yeovil, and how everyone can play a part in reducing this problem by using one of the many rubbish bins that are provided throughout the Town”.

Mobiles, which have been made from upcycled plastic bottles and lids, will be used to hang any litter that has been found during the day on Monday 7 July. The mobiles will be hung between the flower towers which are located in Middle Street. The mobiles will be left up for the day and will certainly give residents and visitors to the town an insight into the amount of litter dropped on a daily basis.

Yeovil won Gold in last year’s South West in Bloom competition for the fifth time and 9 neighbourhood awards in the Britain in Bloom contest.

The Yeovil in Bloom initiative is managed and funded by Yeovil Town Council, and delivered with the support of South Somerset District Council.
