THERE was an emotional farewell for members of the 2381 Squadron at Ilminster Air Cadets as a key figure at the group stepped down.

Flight Lieutenant Steve Penny, who has been involved for around ten years, will move on to other duties in the Air Cadet organisation.

He has handed over the reins to Flight Lieutenant Colin Parkinson.

A spokesman from the squadron said: “Colin has been with the squadron for the past four years and is looking forward to the challenges that his role will bring him.”

As a leaving gift, Steve was presented with a Heavy Horse Driving Experience Day which he said he was looking forward to taking part in.

The handing over parade was attended by the Mayors of Ilminster, Chard and Crewkerne and by Sector Commander Squadron Leader John Heath.

In July this year, Steve was chosen for the Mayor’s Award by Ilminster Mayor Emma Jane Taylor for his work with the group and helping to increase numbers three-fold.

She described him as a “steady and dependable leader who continues to inspire and motivate young people from Ilminster and surrounding areas”.

She added: “He has performed a valuable service for the youth of Ilminster with outstanding leadership, dedication and hard work.”

The squadron has had successes in the Devon and Somerset Wing Swimming Competition, winning the female section and coming a close second in the boys section.

Four cadets are going forward to represent the Devon and Somerset Wing in the regional competition in October.

The squadron also took first place in the Tug of War Competition held at the Somerset Military Tattoo.

The Air Cadet Organisation has lowered its joining age and will now accept young people aged 12 from the start of year eight.

They parade every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7.15-9.45pm and will be holding an open evening tomorrow (Thursday).
