The Olympics are coming!

AS there are less than 2012 days until the London 2012 Olympics, South Somerset District Council is organising a conference that will help to ensure a lasting legacy for the district after the games.

The 2012 Olympics and Yeovil Sports Zone will be high on the agenda when the council hold its first stakeholder conference at Yeovil College on Sunday, February 18. Sports clubs, officials, and volunteers are all invited to the event.

The conference provides sports clubs with an opportunity to shape the future development of sports provision through partnerships within the local area.

Community sports networks could benefit sports clubs in South Somerset, and these will also be explained during the conference.

These networks will engage key voluntary, public and private sector bodies through one partnership with a view to achieving an increase in participation of sport and active leisure.

Jake Hannis, senior sports development officer at the district council, said: "The event will bring clubs, officials, coaches and volunteers together to share ideas and knowledge, and will be an opportunity to continue supporting the delivery of community sport across the district.

"The conference will provide clubs with an opportunity to network with other local clubs, share good practice and the day will be interactive, helping to ensure that the subjects covered during the day meet the particular needs of the clubs attending."

Cllr Sylvia Seal, portfolio holder for leisure culture and wellbeing at the council, said: "These are exciting times for sport in South Somerset. The Olympic Games in 2012 will provide a unique opportunity to promote the benefits of sport.

"There are a wide range of other issues to be discussed on the day and I hope that local sports clubs take advantage of their opportunity to shape the way sport is developed in the district."
