SCHOOLS, groups, clubs and businesses joined the national effort to raise money for Comic Relief on Friday.

Fundraisers put on bake sales, ‘danceathons’ and fancy dress parties to raise as much money as possible in the name of Red Nose Day.

The telethon took place on Friday evening and the total for Comic Relief 2015 was announced as £78million, the highest ever amount for the annual event, taking the charity’s total to more than £1billion over its 30-year existence.

A Red Nose Day spokesman said: “Since the last Red Nose Day, Comic Relief has helped over 12 million people living unimaginably tough lives all over the world, using money raised through Red Nose Day, Sport Relief and other partnerships.

“Money raised this Red Nose Day will help to change the lives of millions more.

Here in the UK, it could help to provide food for families living below the poverty line and help those affected by dementia to lead the best lives they can.

“Across Africa, it could help protect many mothers and children from deadly diseases and provide thousands of children with life-changing access to education.”
