VILLAGERS have again objected to plans to build 16 homes in Broadway, fearing it could open the door to further greenfield development.

A revised planning application has been submitted to South Somerset District Council, seeking permission to build the houses on land at Tanyard.

The authority refused a previous application in December because of the Environment Agency’s flood risk and drainage concerns.

Applicants Mr JV Baker and family say the latest application submission addresses those concerns by including more detailed information.

But neighbouring residents Ben and Jackie Lankester have written to the district council to object to the proposal.

They said: “As local residents we would again strongly object to this resubmitted proposal which is essentially unchanged. The land is greenfield, prone to flooding and an important green edge to the existing development boundary.

“If this is allowed to proceed, then it will open the further development of the large green space behind the Bell Inn between Tanyard and the village school.

“The access road is narrow and already prone to blockage during drop off and pick up times at the local school. The availability of other property for sale in Broadway shows that the village does not need another 16 houses.”

A statement from WYG Planning and Environment on behalf of the Baker family said: “This application is a re-submission of the application which was refused for a single reason on December 5, 2014.

“This reason related to issues associated with flood risk and drainage, and additional technical information is provided as part of this re-submission to address this.”

Last week, The News reported that a further nine homes could be built in the village with a separate application being submitted for land at Varden’s Farm.

A decision is expected to be made on the Tanyard homes by June 3.
