A chip pan has been blamed for a fire at a three storey block of flats in Chard.

Two fire fighting appliances attended reports of a domestic house fire at Coles Place at 4am this morning.

The firefighters found a kitchen fire in a second floor flat and as it was suspected that people were inside the building the crews drafted in two more fire fighting appliances from Axminster and Ilminster fire stations.

Police and ambulance staff were also requested.

By 4:22am the fire had been extinguished and it was discovered that there was nobody inside the building after a search of the flat using two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets.

The fire was in the kitchen of the first floor of the three storey building.

Three people had oxygen administered after suffering light smoke inhalation.
