TIME is ticking for people wishing to volunteer with the British Red Cross in Somerset supporting people to remain independent after an accident or illness.

The Red Cross is looking for volunteers to join the Somerset Oncology Support service, which drives cancer patients to their oncology appointments in Taunton and Bristol.

Volunteers are also needed for other services across Somerset, including giving practical and emotional support for people in their own homes after a hospital stay.

Volunteers, including people with experience of driving a van, are also needed in the mobility aids service, which loans mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, to people after an accident or illness.

The deadline for all applications is May 11.

Babette Fuller, directorate manager of Haematology, Oncology & Palliative Care at the Beacon Centre, said: “Some of our patients have to attend the Beacon Centre on a daily basis for several weeks.

“The additional stress and cost that incurs can prove very difficult to endure at a time of already heightened anxiety.

“The Red Cross, supported by dedicated volunteers, provides an invaluable service for many of these patients and the testament of Valerie demonstrates how much the Red Cross drivers are hugely appreciated.”
