MORE work needs to be done on two areas prone to flooding in Ilminster, according to the town’s Mayor.

Cllr Emma Jane Taylor spoke during the town’s annual community assembly on the issue of flooding and roadworks.

Over the last 12 months, the town council has had to tackle a number of flooding issues, as well as dealing with the lengthy closure of The Beacon due to a landslip.

The council secured grant funding with action groups from Station Road and Home Farm Way to create a cul - vert to take run-off water from the Horlicks site as well as funding a bund to protect park homes.

Cllr Taylor said: “Another problem in Station Road was the flooding that occurred on the road between Brad - fords and Trafalgar court.

“When a camera was put down the drain, it was discovered that when the development went up, a gas pipe was laid through the water drainage pipe, inhibiting the flow of water that soon found its way to the surface. Work to resolve this issue is planned for later this year.”

The Mayor, who is not be standing for re-election in May, added that the town council had secured grant fund - ing to set up two community resilience stores, which will mean sandbags will be available in Ilminster.

She added: “The one flood risk area that is proving difficult to solve is the one at the junction of Ditton Street and Shudrick Lane. The culvert is in need of major repair work but the Environ - ment Agency has no plans to carry out the work – possibly because of the cost involved.

“The town council has been talking to the planning department at SSDC and officers at SCC to try and find a way forward and secure funds to have the work done. I hope this is something the new council will continue to work on.”
