Three men have been taken to hospital this morning after a serious crash on the A303 westbound between Southfields and The Eagle Tavern.

Firefighters from Ilminster and Chard, together with a rescue tender from Taunton were called to the scene just after 7am following calls from ambulance and police.

Initial reports were that people were trapped in the wreckage after a serious crash.

A fire service spokesman said: "Shortly after arriving crews confirmed the RTC involved two vehicles, with three people trapped, and set to work with hydraulic cutting equipment."

By 8.15 the crews had freed three male casualties from the vehicles.

They were taken to hospital via land ambulances.

The vehicles and scene have been made safe, with duty of care handed over to the Police.

The A303/A358 is closed westbound to traffic at the Little Chef.
