A YOUNG man is in a critical condition after being stabbed several times in an early hours attack in Somerset.

The victim was involved in an altercation with another man at the entrance to a block of flats yesterday (Sunday, January 31).

He suffered stab wounds to his head and body and is in hospital, where he is described as "critical but stable", according to police.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and quizzed by police on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident in the Green Mead area of Yeovil at around 1.15am yesterday.

Det Insp Lee Jones said enquiries are ongoing.

He added: "We’re carrying out a full inquiry to establish the facts surrounding this incident which has left a man in a serious condition in hospital.

“A man has been arrested and he’s in custody for questioning.

“We’re asking for the public’s help and would like to speak to anyone who saw or heard any part of this altercation, or anyone who saw a man running away from the Green Mead area between 1am and 1.30am.

“We know this will cause concern in the local community but I’d like to assure people we believe it to be an isolated incident involving people who know each other.

“There will be a continuing police presence in the local area as our enquiries are ongoing.”
