If you were faced with a road closed sign and had a grumble today, take a look at what may have been just around the corner.
Somerset County Council’s highways team responded to around 30 reports of fallen trees today (Monday) as Storm Imogen raged across the county.
This followed the service’s busiest weekend since the 2014 floods with around 200 out of hours emergency callouts between Friday night and Monday morning.
Highways have been helping remove fallen trees across the county, inspecting roads and closing and reopening them where needed in liaison with the Police. On Sunday evening highways staff delivered sandbags to Curry Rivel primary school to help protect it from further flooding.
Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “A big thank you to our highways team for helping keep our roads clear over the past 72 hours. The weather has been extremely disruptive but they’ve done a terrific job in responding quickly to help keep drivers safe.”
