A TAUNTON soldier who was reportedly sentenced to a month in prison in France following violence at the Euros has been warned he will face disciplinary action from the army.

England fan Lee Phillips, 23, who it is believed is a Bristol City club supporter and attended Ladymead School - now Taunton Academy - appeared in court in Marseille charged in connection with violence at the weekend.

He also received a two- year ban from France for “throwing bottles at a woman”, who threw bottles back at Phillips.

Phillips, a Rifleman with the 1 Rifles, now faces disciplinary action from the Army after ‘falling short’ of the force’s standards.

An Army spokesman said: “We can confirm that Rifleman Phillips of 1 Riles has been convicted and sentenced in France and banned from the country for two years.

“All those who are found to fall short of the Army’s high standards will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.”

The French Embassy in London and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office were not available to confirm the prison sentence, with Phillips’ brother, Ivor, saying he believed he returned from France this week.

Phillips was arrested as England supporters were involved in a number of confrontations with Russian fans before, during and after a match between the two nations on Saturday, which was held at Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

England fans had gathered in the city ahead of the Three Lions’ first match of the tournament but were involved in a number of incidents as violence erupt- ed throughout the historic French port.

Scores of people were injured in the ugly scenes, with fighting also breaking out inside the stadium.

Uefa branded the behav- iour of both England and Russia fans before and after the game ‘’unacceptable’’ and said it would not hesitate to impose additional sanctions, including disqualifying both sides if there is a repeat of the trouble.

Phillips was not the only England fan to face court action over the trouble.

Alexander Booth and Ian Hepworth were the first fans to be dealt with.

Booth, 20, from Huddersfield, was jailed for two months for throwing a bot- tle at police and banned from France for two years.

Hepworth, 41, a psychiatric nurse from Sheffield, was given a three-month sentence for the same of- fence and the same ban.
