DRIVERS on the M5 faced severe delays after a big accident involving three cars has caused one lane to be blocked.

The crash was between junction 22 for A38 and junction 21 for A370 West Wick earlier today (Friday, June 29).

Traffic has now returned to normal.

The crash was on the M5 travelling northbound but affected traffic travelling in both directions with 10 miles of slow congestion.

One lane was blocked because of the three vehicle crash and debris on the road. It was reported that lane three was blocked by a vehicle that had collided with the central reservation.

Avon and Somerset Police were called to the incident shortly before 5pm. The ambulance also attended but it is not known if anyone was injured in the collision.

The heavy congestion follows earlier few delays in Somerset due to holiday traffic and two crashes.

Reports showed stop-start traffic on M5 Northbound between J26 A38 (Wellington) and J21 A370 / B3440 (Weston-super-Mare).

There were also reports of a crash on the A38 near A361 in Monkton Heathfield - police believed it to be a non-injury crash.

There was also another on the A39 Quantock Road between B3339 Sandford Hill (Bridgwater) and Main Road (Cannington).

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "This is a single car collision where a car has hit a telegraph pole on the A39, one mile from Cannington.

"The driver, a male, is complaining of chest pains so the ambulance service has been called.

"BT will also be attending to deal with the pole."
