COMMUNITIERS Minister Sajid Javid visited Somerset today (Thursday) to give his backing to the the county's Conservative Group plans for the county over the next four years.

Mr Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, attended the official launch of the group’s 2017 manifesto ahead of the county council elections in May.

The manifesto, entitled ‘A Clear Plan for Somerset’, includes 12 pledges to local residents with a focus on low council tax, high investment and quality services.

Following the launch event at the Swan Hotel, Wells, Mr Javid said: “The Somerset Conservative Group has a strong track record of delivering for local people over recent years and has outlined a very clear plan for the future in its manifesto.

“I fully support the group’s plans for children and education, adult social care, highways, homes, jobs, investment and protecting and promoting Somerset, among other things, which are in line with the Government’s commitment to building a country that works for everyone.

“I hope the people of Somerset recognise the successes of the past and commitments for the future, and support the strong list of Conservative candidates at the ballot box in May.”

John Osman, leader of Somerset County Council and the Conservative Group, unveiled the 12 pledges in the manifesto.

He also set out ‘The Vision for Somerset’ aimed at increasing life, work and education opportunities for local people, to include the creation of a new university, garden town, business parks and energy initiatives.

The manifesto includes a series of specific pledges for each of Somerset’s five districts – Mendip, Sedgemoor, South Somerset, Taunton Deane and West Somerset.

Mr Osman highlighted some of the many achievements since the Conservatives took control of the council eight years ago.

He said: “Only the Conservatives can be trusted in the future to keep your council tax low, obtain investment for schools, roads and the community and provide quality services to local residents.

“On Thursday, May 4, residents have a clear choice. You can either return a positive Conservative administration with a clear plan for the county, or elect a negative Lib Dem administration which has not proposed any solutions to solve the issues facing Somerset.”
