Chard Rugby Club is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – awarded to community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Chard RFC is one of the groups on the shortlist.

The club is aiming to install lighting at the Crewkerne training grounds to enable training to take place in the winter evenings, opening up more opportunities for the club as a whole.

Chairman Gavin Smillie said he was delighted that the club has been shortlisted to receive a share of the Tesco ‘bag charge fund’.

With support from the businesses in town the club can continue to provide rugby coaching, it said.
