THE public is being asked to keep drink drivers off the road after 108 suspects were arrested by Avon and Somerset Police last month.

Motorists arrested during the force's Operation Tonic road safety campaign in June have been blasted by Chief Inspector Kevan Rowlands.

He said: "The people we arrested have put lives at risk by choosing to drive with alcohol or drugs in their system.

"Some of the people arrested are clearly dealing with difficult situations in their lives.

"If you know someone who is coping by using alcohol or drugs and still driving then please reach out to them and get them to stop before they add a drink drive arrest or the trauma of a collision to their problems.

"The response of the public over the Operation Tonic period shows that the vast majority of people know this is wrong and are willing to help us bring people to justice.

"Our work doesn’t end with the Tonic campaign and we will continue to act on information received from the public to ensure that the small minority of people who continue to drive over the limit are arrested and put before the courts."

He added that if someone won’t stop driving while drunk or drugged you need to tell the police before someone gets hurt.

He appealed to people to dial 999 if you know someone is driving now while drunk or under the influence of drugs.
