FLOOD warnings have been issued across the South West following yesterday's heavy rain.

There are two major flood warnings near South Somerset, as well as large areas where cars have been warned of a risk of road flooding.

The environment agency has issued a red flood warning near junction 25 on the M5 in Taunton.

The warning is in place around the River Tone from Bathpool to Ham including Ruishton and Creech St Michael, in particular affecting riverside properties.

A spokesman for the environment agency said: "As a result of the heavy overnight rainfall the levels on the River Tone are rising steadily and are forecast to peak around 7am (March 15).

"Bankfull conditions can be expected from about 5am and there is a risk of flooding to low lying land, roads and properties adjacent to the river."

Another major flood warning is in place around the River Yarty, from Yarcombe to Axminster.

The spokesman added: "Heavy rain falling in the area will continue throughout early morning (March 15). This is causing the River Yarty to rise.

"Properties and low lying areas are expected to flood. River levels will be at their highest early Thursday morning Flood waters may be deep and fast flowing in these areas.

"Residents are strongly urged to take action now. Remain safe and be aware of your local surroundings.

"We will be closely monitoring the situation throughout the day and this message will be updated as the situation changes."
