With Easter on it’s way, many will be taking the time to catch up on some much needed family time and it's common for flowers to be exchanged in abundance.

But if you or your family own a cat, you may want to think twice about your floral purchases.

Cats Protection is making people aware that lilies in particular are extremely poisonous to your feline friends and could kill them.

It is not just the ingestion of the plants that can cause signs of poisoning, brushing past the flower can have the same effects.

Signs of poisoning include vomiting, blindness, paralysis, renal failure, coma and death.

Identified as the most dangerous types of lily are:-

Easter Lily (Lilium Longiflorum)

Tiger Lily (Lilium Tigrinum)

Rubrum Lily (Lilium Speciosum)

Stargazer Lily (Lilium Orientalis)

Japanese Show Lily (Lilium Lancifolium)

Leopard Lily (Dieffenbachia) (Dumbcane)

Asiatic Lilies

Species of the Day Lily (Hemerocalis)

The reason for the warning is that Lilies are becoming more popular in bouquets and incidents are increasing every year. Because of this the RSPCA is currently campaigning for clearer labelling about the dangers to cats on bouquets and plants.

What other plants can be deadly to cats?

Poinsettias

Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera)

Croton (Joseph's Coat)

Philodendron

Rhododendron

Deadly Nightshade

So please be careful when it comes to buying flowers for loved on this Easter, it could cost them their cat.
