A DECISION is set to be made soon on whether Ilminster Entertainment Society’s great Old Bakery plans are given the green light.

The Old Bakery has been purchased by the Warehouse Theatre Company as an addition to the existing theatre facilities.

A planning application to transform the building into a performance area with kitchen and storage has been submitted and a decision is due this month.

Malcolm Young, a IES trustee, said: “We had nearly a year of really intensive fundraising.

“We raised the money and were able to buy the Old Bakery, and we are in that limbo stage where we are waiting to get that planning application approved.

“We had that real pressure of trying to get all the money to buy the building by March 31 but now that is gone.”

It is proposed to extend and alter premises to provide a large rehearsal and theatrical workshop space, additional storage, including a permanent home for the large theatrical wardrobe which has outgrown its home in the existing theatre, and a small workshop for the manufacture of scenery and other theatrical props.

The Old Bakery is attached at the rear to the theatre but there is no internal access between buildings.

It is proposed to build a small extension which will give internal access direct from the the existing theatre to the Old Bakery.

The second larger extension is proposed to cover the majority of the existing walled yard with a small area of yard retained to give service access to the existing and proposed flat roof.
