A BRANCH of Lidl which is currently being built in Somerset after the demolition of its former store has applied for an alcohol license.

The new Lidl set to open in Wells in February 2025 is seeking Somerset Council's permission to sell alcohol between 7am and 11pm from Monday to Sunday.

The final deadline for representations is 11:59pm on Thursday, May 30.

In the application, Lidl GB Ltd wrote: "Notice is hereby given that, we, Lidl Great Britain Limited have made an application under Section 17 of Part 3 of the Licensing Act 2003 to Somerset Council for a Premises Licence for Lidl Great Britain Limited, Strawberry Way South, Wells, BA5 2AZ for sale of alcohol by retail for consumption off the premises during the hours 07:00-23:00 Monday to Sunday."

The former Lidl store on Strawberry Way closed on Easter Saturday ahead of demolition plans to make way for the newer, larger branch set to open next year.

Wells' new Lidl will sit not only on land left behind by the former store, but also adjoining land which used to house a Travis Perkins outlet.

Last week only the shop's rear storage area remained as demolition works had progressed rapidly over the past few weeks.
