Brave William the Guinea pig

A YEOVIL woman has spoken of her sadness at the death of her amazing pet guinea pig William – who fought a brave and courageous battle against cancer.

Susan Legg, of King Arthur Drive, first became William’s “mum” when he was just six weeks old in 2001 and it was four years later when he was diagnosed with cancer and had to have a tumour removed.

After his operation he came to live inside Susan’s home along with her two cats Oscar and Daisy-May – plus a constant supply of old Yeovil Express newspapers.

He made a full recovery, but in December 2006 he was diagnosed with a heart murmur and was put on a drug treatment usually used for cats and dogs.

But Susan said: “He responded so well to this that the drug company have now acknowledged this by making the information available for use with other small animals - so in effect William has pioneered this drug and will hopefully save other lives too.

“William had been through a lot of things that us humans would find difficult, let alone being a little Guinea Pig.

“With the odds stacked against him he'd always been a happy little soul and was often referred to as a little miracle.”

But sadly William died a few months ago and it is only now that Susan believes his story should be told.

“I felt other people should know about this truly amazing and intelligent little guinea pig,” she said.

Susan would like to thank the vets and staff at the Delaware Veterinary Group in Yeovil for their support, as well as Sue Thomas at the Yeovil Express for her kindness.
