LOCAL MEPs have praised the recent decision by the EU to overturn rules equating to what one described as a ‘greengrocer beauty contest’.

Mr Watson, Member of the European Parliament for the Liberal Democrats, has spoken out in support of the decision, describing it as ‘great news’ to abolish ‘ridiculous regulations’.

He said: “This is great news indeed; the commission have at long last seen sense on this issue.

“Consumers obviously demand high quality produce that is both clean and healthy. But why some countries like France and Germany feel consumers are concerned by how wonky or knobbly fruit and veg appears is absurd.”

He added: “At a time of global food shortages and rising prices, it’s good to see sensible measures being taken to remove ridiculous regulation.

“Ultimately Europe needs to concentrate on real issues that affect its citizens.”

Earlier in the week, Conservative MEP Neil Parish released a statement also praising the actions of European Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.

He said: “To stop stores selling food at a time like this is morally unjustifiable.

“Credit should be given to the EU Commissioner for pushing through these proposals, and pointing out that this is a matter that need not be decided by the EU.”

EU laws to ensure fruit and vegetables were sold in standard shapes and sizes were put in place following requests from food buyers to assist them in large-scale purchases.
