A 17-YEAR-OLD from Burnham, who refused to turn a blind eye to anti-social behaviour, was presented with a winner’s certificate in the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards.

Kirsty Hembery, who is a member of the youth town council, responded to research that had shown her area suffered from alcohol and drug abuse, anti-social behaviour, graffiti and criminal damage.

She played a key role in setting up a youth café to tackle the problems. The café aims to promote a sense of well-being through enjoyment and achievement while encouraging respect and pride.

Her achievements include successfully persuading a funding panel to part with more than £5,000 to get the project started.

Her nomination said: “She has shown responsibility and maturity beyond her years.”
