AN 18-year-old woman from Weston was among those honoured in the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards on Friday.

The awards are run by Rotary International, the Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News and BBC Somerset.

On the night 22 young people received certificates and prize money totalling £1,000, which was donated by Rotary, the Avon and Somerset Constabulary and Connexions Somerset.

Receiving a highly commended certificate was Rosalind Wright, who is studying a BTEC National Diploma in Public Services at Weston College.

Her achievements include fundraising the Help for Heroes charity, and working as a volunteer carer for the Over the Wall charity which gives seriously ill children time away from hospital enjoying some fun activities.

She also works as a part-time assistant nurse on an adult acute psychiatric unit at Weston General Hospital.

The awards were presented at Somerset College, Taunton, by Britain's wheelchair tennis number one and Paralympian Lucy Shuker, who lives in Somerset.
