PRIDE of Somerset Youth Awards winner Steven Salter, 13, is a source of pride to the people of Buckland St Mary, where he lives.

At the age of nine he played his cornet in the village carol service. The next year, he stepped in at the last minute to lead the village’s St George’s Day pageant when the chosen St George got stage fright!

He is a member of Holyrood Community School’s orchestra and swing band and helps run a club for young church goers.

He has busked for charity and was an active member of his primary school’s healthy eating project in Buckland.

He has even formed a chess-playing friendship with a gentleman of 85 after school. He helps on his dad’s farm, looks after his granddad and sounded the last post at Buckland St Mary church last year for Remembrance Day.

After the ceremony, Steven said: “It’s really exciting to be here. I really enjoy helping people.”
