AN inspirational story of courage and love earned brother and sister Joshua and Katy Aldridge, of Yeovil, winner’s certificates in the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards.

In 2004, Katy was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and on Christmas Eve she started a six-month treatment programme.

She then enjoyed a year’s remission before a relapse in June 2006, meaning she needed a bone marrow transplant.

She dealt with the news the irradiation would mean she would be unlikely to have children and despite the treatment rendering her unable to walk, eat or drink, she bore the discomfort with great dignity.

When Katy needed a vital bone marrow transplant, her brother was there for her.

At the age of 16, Josh was found to be a suitable bone marrow donor for his sister.

Josh, who has learning difficulties, spent the summer of 2007 ‘wrapped in cotton wool’ so he didn’t hurt himself before enduring the pain of the post-op. But he only needed two painkillers and two days after wanted to get back on the football pitch.

His nomination says he demonstrated remarkable courage and did not hesitate in wanting to help his sister.

At the ceremony, Katy, 13, said: “I’m feeling fine now and it feels amazing to be nominated. We’re grateful to mum and dad who nominated us and I’m very grateful to Josh for giving me his bone marrow. Words can’t describe it – it was the best present I could ever have.

Josh added: “I was happy to be able to do it for my sister.”
