PAST master Steven Perring, of Taunton, won a winner’s certificate in the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards for his academic achievement and his voluntary work inspiring others in the field.

His history grades saw him at Richard Huish College in Taunton at the tender age of 14 - sitting his A-level before he’d done his GCSE.

Now 17, at college he has set up a history society of which he is chairman and has organised trips and talks. He chairs the archaeological society and has volunteered to help set up history clubs at Bishop Fox’s Community and The Castle schools in Taunton.

He told the awards audience: “I’ve always been interested in the way past people have reacted and how one person can change the face of history for the better – people here have shown that tonight.”
