YEOVIL police are reminding people to be on their guard against rogue traders - especially during the summer months when the bogus workmen will come knocking at the door.
PC Lee Hall said that the summertime is the preferred time of year for rogue traders wanting to pounce by offering gardening or house maintenance services.
But he has reminded people to be wary of any strangers at the door or those who are "cold calling" looking for business.
"All residents are strongly advised that before allowing any work to be carried out, they or a member of their family should check the credentials of those calling at the door," he said.
"All traders that call at your door, or post fliers through your letterbox, are obliged under law to provide details to you."
PC Hall said callers need to show a proof of name and address, a full written quotation for works, and a business telephone number.
"They must also give you a seven-day cooling off period until work is started," he said.
"I would urge everyone to check their rights and insist on checking credentials before allowing any work to be carried out."
And PC Hall stressed: "Protect yourself, your property and your money!
"Any doubts please contact Trading Standards or the police."
People are urged to look at a list of companies currently checked and sanctioned by Trading Standards as approved traders.
