AROUND 130 students, family, friends, local employers and special guests including Deputy Mayor of Yeovil, Phil Chandler, gathered at the Ivel Barbarians Rugby Club recently to celebrate the achievements of students from health and care courses at Yeovil College.
Students were congratulated for their achievements after another year of hard work and in particular students were recognised for their commitment and determination in completing qualifications and displaying particular skills and enthusiasm during their chosen course.
Thirty-one awards were given in total including the Nicola Baker Cup for Endeavour presented to Hayley Meen, 26, from Yeovil.
As an administrator in Kaleidoscope Nursery in Sherborne, Hayley volunteered to help with the children. This led her to enrol on to the NVQ Level 2 Children’s Care, Learning & Development course in September 2007.
Hayley successfully completed this course and is now nearing completion of the Level 3. Hayley has been offered the position of Deputy Manager at the nursery. Although at times she found the studies difficult, Hayley’s drive and commitment has never faltered.
The Westcraft Endeavour Award was presented to Childcare Level 1 student Sonia Braddick, from South Petherton.
Sonia was nominated for the award by the Childcare lecturers for her perseverance, being a good practitioner and always giving one hundred percent.
The Honey Pot Best Practice Award was presented to Shaye Jaques, from Yeovil. Shaye is a Level 2 Diploma in Childcare and Education student who was nominated for being `outstanding’ in her work placement.
Many awards were kindly sponsored by local employers including Smartees Day Care Nursery, Little Rascals, The Honey Pot Nursery, Westcraft Windows Ltd, Marsh Lane Nursery and Lufton College.
Head of department Kate Hill said: “Tonight is all about celebrating student success both full-time and part-time regardless of age. However, we cannot give an award to every student.
“Therefore we will be giving awards to students who have demonstrated exceptional and inspirational qualities during their practice and studies.
“This event also gives us an opportunity to thank the sponsors, employers, friends and family who have supported the college and students over the course of the year.”
Staff, students and guests enjoyed the evening of awards presentations which was followed by a buffet supper.
