Adventure in Africa for biology students

A GROUP of biology students from Yeovil College and Strode College are enjoying a three-week field trip to Africa as part of their studies.

The trip, the latest in a string of popular annual residentials, gives the students the opportunity to examine a range of habitats first hand.

The students will travel across South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia visiting everything from deserts to waterfalls, vineyards to mountains. They will also go to the Namib Naukluft National Park and the Chobe National Park, which is Botswana’s premier game reserve and home to a diverse wildlife, including elephants.

Along the way, the students will take part in a number of activities. These will include rafting on the Orange River, diving in False Bay, climbing Table Mountain and a canoe safari on the Okavango Delta. The trip will also include cultural elements, such as a visit to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, receiving Namibian hospitality in Windhoek and spending time with bushmen in Gobabis.

The students will complete project work throughout and write journals about their experiences. The journals will be added to their trip website, a link to which can be found on the Yeovil College website.

This residential is just the latest in a long line of extraordinary visits made by student biologists in recent years. Other destinations have included Vietnam in 2008, New Zealand and Australia in 2007, Costa Rica in 2004 and Sri Lanka in 2002.

The students will be giving a presentation about their trip at Strode College in September.
