A RECRUITMENT drive is being held later this week to try and find volunteers wanting to get involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme across South Somerset.
A group of volunteers, called Yeovil Golds, will be at the Ham Hill rangers’ hut at the Ham Hill Country Park on Sunday, November 15, between 2pm and 5pm to showcase the award scheme.
Volunteers will be there to chat about what they do and for people to find out how they can become involved.
Yeovil Golds is made up of people who all have an interest in helping youngsters and do so by running their own open award centre for participants to undertake their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
In addition they also support other award units to do the same. They have successfully had students complete their bronze, silver and gold awards in the previous year.
A spokesman said: “As a volunteer you could have experience and knowledge without knowing it!
“This could be of use to young people undertaking any level of the award; it isn’t all about tramping on the moors and hiking up mountains.
“If walking in the countryside is something you enjoy then equally this volunteering opportunity may be just the thing for you.
“The Yeovil Golds group is also very sociable and realises that having relaxation is just as important as the work they do with the young people.”
Volunteers are asked to give what time they feel is appropriate and this can be an hour a month to a couple of hours a week.
The training evenings, day walks and expeditions are roughly one a month throughout the year as required.
If you are unable to attend the event on November 15, but would like more details then contact Anne Blight on 01935-433008 or email ablight@somerset.gov.uk or you can join the Yeovil Golds at Morley House in Yeovil on the second Monday of the month at 8pm.
