THE 2009 Engineering Challenge which is sponsored by the Government’s AimHigher initiative and the Royal Navy will take place on two days later this month at the Fleet Air Arm Museum at RNAS Yeovilton.
Students from the region’s schools and colleges will enter in teams of six to respond to demanding engineering-related challenges which will be kept secret until the days of the event which are scheduled for November 11 and November 13.
Previous challenges have included designing and building an ejection seat, a retractable undercarriage and even an aircraft carrier flight deck complete with catapult and arrester wires.
The challenge will be introduced by former Blackburn Buccaneer Observer John Eatwell, local engineer Fred Ditchburn and former ITV science presenter Tony English.
Head of the Fleet Air Arm Museum’s education department, Julia Hodson, said: “Students complete these challenges mentally taxed but hugely stimulated by having had to design and build from scratch a real engineering task in a competitive environment.
“Many decide to go on to study engineering at college or university.”
